Barbara Barnes >> was the nanny of Prince William (and later Prince Harry) for four and a half years. Royal gossip had it that after William's birth, Diana irritated her by clambering out of bed in the middle of the night to answer his cries, when the requirements of stiff upper
lipped ness demanded that he should have been trained to sleep through. She left by mutual agreement in January 1987 for reasons that were never made public. Some said Barnes felt less the executive-in-charge of child rearing, as most British nannies like to consider themselves, than Diana's reluctant second-in-command. Others suspected Diana was wounded when William learned to say 'BaBa' before he learned to say 'Mama.' But the version given the greatest currency is that Charles and Diana believed that Barnes, who doted on William, wasn't strict enough, and that she resented the intrusion when Harry was born.
Ruth Wallace >> along with Olga Powell stepped in after the departure of Barnes. Wallace was much more of an authoritarian. Some credence her for getting William through his "Billy the Basher" years. Wallace was dismised after about three years.
Jessie Webb >> took the place of Wallace in May of 1990 (Powell stayed on). Many believe Diana preferred for the caretakers to only stay so long...it prevented them from becoming "too close" to the boys and circumventing her status as "mother".
Mabel Anderson >> was the nanny used for the boys while they spent time with Charles (during his and Diana's separation). Anderson was a former nanny of Charles.
Tiggy Legge-Bourke >> was William's and Harry's last full-time nanny. The boys viewed her as an older sister type...she was young and engaging. Many believed Diana to be jealous of Tiggy and that it was Diana who fired her. However, upon Diana's death, Charles asked Tiggy to help support them. Both boys are very close with her till this day. Both attended her wedding and she even skipped out on the last part of her honeymoon to vacation with them. She is a frequent visitor to Highgrove.
